Lewis Spencer was born in 1750 in Grand Bay Alabama to Gloria Reeves and Lew Spencer. He was a freed slave that became a farmer. In 1775, he met Garrett Smiley and was smitten. Within 6 months they were married and settled in Grand Bay.
They had eight children:
(affectionately known as the ELITE 8)
Ellis, Dora, (Earnest) Ernest, Sallie, Maggie, Louis, William, Hettie.
